Because soldiers do what’s right regardless of popularity polls. It’s called integrity and it’s sorely lacking in Washington and the voting booth.

Well, it tells you right at the end of the article:
“Recruiting is easier in a slow economy, which limits other job possibilities that are available. But officials also noted that the Army and Marines have added recruiters as well as bonuses and other special benefits to attract more recruits in the midst of the unpopular war in Iraq.”
EDIT: Icabod — how dare you! You know NOTHING of my political orientation. As a matter of fact my father was a Marine and gave them an eye and a knee in Korea! He is retired now and lives with me. I have the utmost respect for fine military.

Because over the last few years the recruiting standards and goals have been dramatically lowered. Their goal was a measly 1,577 recruits. Out of a country of 300+ million, that is a pathetic goal.

“Recruitment” is not “retention”; the people whom the Marines are recruiting are generally teenagers who have not seen the war zone, and thus their recruitment is not any direct judgment on how the war is going.

jurydoc…as always you as a liberal refuse to believe that a person can love his country enough to lay down his life for it.
