I have always had a desire to join the air force. A lot of this has to do with my papa telling me stories from wwII and korea. i will never forget the 21 gun salute at his funeral. My papa was bipolar also just like his son my dad. What is this country coming too when the military accepts drug dealers, but not me b/c I was voluntarily observed for 2 secs by a doctor who wrote a script for some bs meds. I went there for a medical opinion, but i got lied too by the doc who told me i could enter the hospital and leave any time I wanted too. This led to me not being able to join the military and bein in serious debt b/c of the bs they put me thru. i know this will reject a security clearance. I expect with obama becoming president the military will prob take a hit and the dems will severely cut military funding. I do support him but mccain was my choice one plan i liked of his was how he wants to eventually abolish nucs like nixon. To be honest I am worried about where are country is heading!! But what can we do? The people that do care, which honestly few do. I must say I sincerely do care about our country, but I can’t join. My friends and fam in the military have always been impressed and i believe i can outsmart them. For example my cousin who is 82nd Airborne and is more than likely going to be SF is always suggesting i join he is also impressed when we go to the range. I was taught to shoot from my other grandpa moms side who was in the USMC during the 50s. I believe his techniques made me an expert shooter. I know I am bragging a lot but I love my ******* country and I want to join the military! But I am discriminated b/c I was honest. Please someone reply for maybe some suggestions.
Well, let me put it this way. You are sitting in a tent, it’s swelteringly hot, everyone is tired, but, well, there’s not much you can do. The man across from you is holding his gun, and is in fairly good spirits, considering the situation. You begin to chat with him, when suddenly, his mood flips, and he is snarlingly PISSED at you. And then you once again notice the gun in his hand, which is now pointed at you.
I wouldn’t risk letting someone with bi-polar in, either. No offense mate, but it’s just a dangerous situation.
The government needs civillians too. Go to school, get some training and get a job with the goverment. Nothing is stopping you from doing that.
Bipolar people enter the military all the time just look at a senior drill instructor. Sorry my lame boot joke of the day
We don’t want to hear your sad life story. Get a life!
Whilst you patriotism is not in question, you are not being discriminated against, those are the Guidelines that The USMC has laid down and probably for very good reason, just the same as if someone is diabetic, has asthma or some other ailment. It’s unfortunate but sometimes you have to live with the cards you are dealt with!
Dear Brandon,
Being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis is a very serious matter and it is not taken lightly. Such a diagnosis is only made by a psychiatric Doctor, in this case it can disqualify you from enlistment.
The reason being is, The US Military (branches) sees this as a form of discharge (unfit for combative duties) in a Service member or Poolee(Civilian Person trying to be a Recruit) or even later if developed a form of Medical Discharge.
The disorder describes a person to have categories of mood disorders (a.k.a Mood Swings) defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated patterns of distress and disconnection. Clinically referred to as mania (Manic Depressive) or, if milder, Hypomania (Moody/Disconnected slightly). These all if diagnosed by a MD and placed in your Medical Chart will deny you a waiver.
I am no MD nor am I a medical personnel to state what condition/level of Bi-Polar disorder you have. I am only speaking from experience of Recruits/Marines I’ve met, based on the out come of their “Medical Condition”.
This is why our recruiters/MEPs are required in selecting those individuals with such conditions to be elevated and then pass a decision of whether of acceptance or rejection, all depends on the severity.
If you feel you are up to the task of being a US Marine and feel your worthy enough to join our brotherhood of the few, by all means do not give up.
Get another doctors opinions or two to prove you are able body to join.
But if you know yourself better than any Doctors opinion or Medical personnel diagnostic/judgment (I’m sure you do). If this is a way for you in trying to go around a medical condition that is well developed or even perhaps in a stage that could get you Medically Discharged later down the line.
I suggest you reconsider everything you’re planning/deciding on making. Before you go further with such a task, let me remind you, that in a combat situation such a disorder will 100% likely endanger the life of you, plus the lives of other Marines around you.
This is why the MEPs part of enlistment is there to “weed out” these persons before they even get a chance. This is the hard cold reality of it, The US Military is not for everyone.
I can only advise you in making sure you are fully aware of what you’re really getting into, only because one day where the lives/faiths of US Marines and others may all lie in the hands of you and only you.
Be true to yourself, but unfortunately the calling is not for all to answer. That is why we are known as the few.
Semper Fi Brandon.
Erich.

Do not give up, I believe in you and that you are a bright person.
You have to prove to them that there is nothing wrong with you. Otherwise they will treat you like they do with the rest, just reject you and think nothing more.
Like I said you know the true self of you, and if you are a man true to himself and also his words/actions. Than there should be nothing that could stop you from achieving your goal.
Email me with any questions or problems.

My Grandfather a US Marine once before me said to me,
“A Marine is a Marine before he even knows about the once in a life time Challenges/Title. He is already one by his actions and commitments to his responsibilities in his life’s roles, by his pure loyalty to it”
The 3 most overused and misused words in modern America;
DISCRIMIATION, RACISM AND TERRORISM
In this case, it is not discrimination, it is ensuring the welfare of the military is maintained as a whole regardless of individual wants. If someone is “not fit” in every way for military service, they will not be allowed to join the brotherhood.
There are a million ways one can serve his/her country!
