Ok, well for a while now, about 3-4 years now, I’ve been really considering joining the Marines for my career when I graduate out of high school. I think it would be a good experience for me and when I get even older, and help me become a better person. I’m also, not all to interested in getting a regular job sitting in an office all day, not fun sounding.
I want the experience, and be able to proudly say I served my time in the United States Marines. I want to help other countries, and their kids get a better lifestyle. I see these pictures of soldiers giving kids stuff and helping them, and to me, it’s touching.
I know my grandpa served in the USMC during WWII and fought in Iwo Jima. He died in 1996, so I was still really young then (I’m a sophomore in HS now). I would ask him for advice and what it was like to be in the Marines, but since he passed away I can’t.
So, to you guys who are in the Marines, what’s life like in the Marines, tell me what it’s like…
First off Manderz, this posting asked for the opinions of Marines, not their girlfriends or wives. I really hate it when a Marine’s wife or girl tries to tell others what it’s like to be a Marine, especially when they start off their sentence with “If you have a girlfriend…” Obviously this individual is more concerned with what really matters, being a Marine.
That being said, I will tell you about my experience as a Marine and you can go from there. I’ve been a Marine for 19 years, 15 of those years as a commissioned officer. You have the right attitude, it’s not about an MOS, it’s about the pride of being a Marine and knowing that once you’ve earned the title, it cannot be taken away from you. Don’t get disillusioned when you can’t change the world, just do your part and take pride in knowing that it helped someone and that whoever it is you helped will know that help came from a Marine. Life in the Marine Corps is not easy, it was never meant to be easy. You will work for everything you get. The reward will be a meager paycheck, a demanding life, and the satisfaction of knowing at the end of the day you’re still a US Marine. I started out as an 0844, enlisted artillery fire direction control. After I went to college, I got commissioned and became a Marine Laywer. Life has been good, the travel interesting, and the job rewarding. I wish you the best in your decision. Just remember it’s not about a girl, it’s about you first. Get established as a Marine, the girls will come, trust me.
Thank you for your interest in the United States Marine Corps, thank you for wanting to serve your country. I’m sorry you don’t have your grandpa To talk to I am very sure he would be proud of you and your interest in the Corps. If the Marine Corps is in your blood and you feel the call there is no use to fight it. Here are some things to think about. Attitude may be the most important, you have to learn to expect things to turn out right, no negative thinking, how are your grades? If they are good and you can compete in college than you may want to consider becoming an Officer of Marines. If your grades are average and you don’t really like school you may want to consider enlisting after Jr College or High school, but you have plenty time to think about that. Set very high standards for yourself from now on don’t accept failure keep working hard to do the best you can. I wish you the best I will help you any way I can I am a grandpa, a Marine and the father of a Marine. Should you want to reach me my e-mail is Semper fi
You seem like a smart dude
Go to college
do NROTC
become and officer and serve
I think it’s great you want to
I’m going to do ROTC in college
well dude its ok i mean it all depends on your MOS. Although no matter what its a hard life…being away from your family takes a g od tole on you and then all the rules ts kind of annoying.
i mean if you want to be a grunt…life is going to be very hard some want it so bad and then when they have it they hate it.
then again you could have a job where all you do is work in an office.
if you want to help and still see action you need a jb where you can do both.
Thats what i wanted so i chose combat photographer…..so far i havent deployed yet because 2 guys from my shop are already there.
Its all what you make of it really you could love it or hate it its alll up to you.
If you have a girlfriend it can be hard because you will spend alot of time apart for the first year because of bootcamp, training, school etc. Its hard to say what job to choose, to be able to help children in other countries. because sometimes when you get deployed, you dont even end up working the job you are trained for. If you really want to be able to help children you should join the peace corps or something. Who knows if we will still be sending alot of troops to iraq by the time you have joined and settled at your duty station. It all depends on where your unit is stationed also. Some people get nice working hours.. others work 16 hours a day. I’m a Marine wife and we are stationed in 29 palms, CA. My husband has to work alot and is always out in the field. This is the base where people go for training before deployement. My husband works on AAV (amtracks). Our last duty station, was nice, he didnt have to work as much and it was easier for us to plan events and things. Here, we can never make plans because his scheduale can change last minute. For example. my husband is going to Korea this month. They told him a date that he would be leaving on, so i bought a plane ticket home to my family. we found out ( a week before i leave to go home) that he wont even be leaving for another month now.
But for the most part it is very nice to be able to serve your country. I am very proud of my hubby
