Are The Marines ‘first To Fight’?

A Marine recently insisted that the USMC “are the 1st to go an fight and have been throughout American history”
I’m curious, where is my history of ‘firsts’ wrong:
Current Iraq War – Army 3rd, 82nd & 101st IDs invade at same time as 1st MD.
First Iraq War – Army 82nd ID has DRF in Saudi first.
Panama – Army 5th, 7th & 82nd IDs invade with some Marines.
Grenada – Army 24th & 82nd IDs invade with some Marines.
Vietnam – Army conducts operations in RVN from 1961, Marines after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964.
Korea – Army 24th ID’ (TF Smith).
World War II – Army in Philippines, Marines in Guam, Navy in Hawaii attacked simultaneously.
World War I – Army 1st ID in October 1917.
(For the sake of space, I’ve left out units < division and single service conflicts, like the Marines in Lebanon or the Army in Mogadishu.)
The claim that Marines are the 'first to fight' is frequent and said in a literal way in this forum. Can anyone support it with facts?

Why Am I Discriminated Against In Joining The Military B/c I ...

I have always had a desire to join the air force. A lot of this has to do with my papa telling me stories from wwII and korea. i will never forget the 21 gun salute at his funeral. My papa was bipolar also just like his son my dad. What is this country coming too when the military accepts drug dealers, but not me b/c I was voluntarily observed for 2 secs by a doctor who wrote a script for some bs meds. I went there for a medical opinion, but i got lied too by the doc who told me i could enter the hospital and leave any time I wanted too. This led to me not being able to join the military and bein in serious debt b/c of the bs they put me thru. i know this will reject a security clearance. I expect with obama becoming president the military will prob take a hit and the dems will severely cut military funding. I do support him but mccain was my choice one plan i liked of his was how he wants to eventually abolish nucs like nixon. To be honest I am worried about where are country is heading!! But what can we do? The people that do care, which honestly few do. I must say I sincerely do care about our country, but I can’t join. My friends and fam in the military have always been impressed and i believe i can outsmart them. For example my cousin who is 82nd Airborne and is more than likely going to be SF is always suggesting i join he is also impressed when we go to the range. I was taught to shoot from my other grandpa moms side who was in the USMC during the 50s. I believe his techniques made me an expert shooter. I know I am bragging a lot but I love my ******* country and I want to join the military! But I am discriminated b/c I was honest. Please someone reply for maybe some suggestions.

I Have A Couple Of Questions About Antique Military Firearm ...

my father left me a USMC issue m1911 .45 caliber handgun, with three magazines. he has killed well over 5 japanese soldiers with that gun. he was issued it in 1933, and carried it all through world war two and korea. the gun is in excellent condition.
my uncle, who served in the US army and was stationed in germany, gave me a german army issued 9mm luger, and it has two magazines. he got it off of one of the many enemy infantry he put down. gun shoots perfect, all parts are from the original era it was captured in. meaning nothing has been replaced since he took it off the enemy.
i am never getting rid of these weapons, i will pass them down to my kids when they turn of age. just out of curiosity though…how much do you think each one, magaznes included, would be worth? take a guess i dont need an exact ammount.

Who Says George Bush Has Made America Less Safe?

In 1993 the attack on the twin towers alerted us to the threat of terrorism in the USA. In 1994 Clinton took over the white house and he made a deal with N. Korea and trusted them not to develop nukes. They lied and now have nukes. The terrorists bombed two US embasies. They bombed a USMC Barracks, the US cole and nothing was done. They planed and funded the 9/11 attacks while Clinton refused to take Bin Laden into custody and while the attack came after the 2000 election Bush could not have stopped it because Clinton was busy boinging babes in the Oval Office while it was being planned. In the eight years Clinton was in office there were at least five terror attacks on US interests. Since Bush cracked down in the last seven years we have not had an attack on an American Interest. Now Obama wants to talk to our enemys and convince them that they should refrain from terror. The president of Iran just said that terrorists will soon have nukes. He will provide them!

Why Does The Army Deploy To Iraq For 12 To 18 Monthes And Th ...

Why does the army stay longers??? My cousin is in the marines and he is on his 3rd tour in Iraq… I think they stay longer because the marines do all the fighting and the army is just on stand by just in case… Marines are a much better fighting force then the army.
Read a few of these:
The Marine Corps has just been called by the New York Times, ‘The elite of this country.’ I think it is the elite of the world.
Admiral William Halsey, U.S.
Navy 2006
Do not attack the First Marine Division. Leave the yellowlegs alone. Strike the American Army.
Orders given to Communist troops in the Korean War;
shortly afterward, the Marines were ordered
to not wear their khaki leggings.
Marines Never Die, They just regroup in Hell.
Fredrick Mcknight US ARMY
The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines.
Lord, how they could fight!
MGen. Frank E.
Lowe, USA; Korea, 26 January 1952
Marines know how to use their bayonets. Army bayonets may as well be paper-weights.
Navy Times; November 1994
Why in hell can’t the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can’t they be like Marines.
Gen. John J.
“Black Jack” Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918
I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world!
General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur; Korea, 21 September 1950
We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing.
What the hell is going on?
Gen. John W. Vessey Jr.
, USA, Chairman of the the Joint Chiefs of Staff
during the assault on Grenada, 1983
The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen.
Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945
Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don’t have that problem.
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985
Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They’re aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They’ve got really short hair and they always go for the throat.
RAdm. “Jay” R.
Stark, USN; 10 November 1995
I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold.
1stLt. Clifton B.
Cates, USMC
in Belleau Wood, 19 July 1918
My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers… These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost.
2nd Lt. Richard C.
Kennard, Peleliu, World War II

Is Marine Corps Looking For?

Korean interpreters/translators? I know Army is for sure.
Reason why I’m asking this is because of the new program that’s about to start in Jan. of 2009. It’s called MILITARY ACCESSIONS VITAL TO NATIONAL INTEREST (MAVNI) RECRUITMENT PILOT. Recruiting Non-citizens and “green-card” holders that are nurses, doctors, linguists.
“The linguists are to be used in a broad range of military jobs — as infantrymen, seamen and military police. Those with the best language skills would be used in intelligence fields.”
I can speak Korean fluently.
I’ve always known that US Army works closer with Korea than Marines. Which means I have less chance of being used in USMC?

Will They Return Us To Corps?

my boyfriend is an American marine and im an Iranian citizen,we have been together for almost a year and we are thinking about getting married and considering it an option, now we have two ways,A) apply through his base, which we have been told takes from 4 months to 3 years,by his Sargent and people who have tried this B) apply for a k1 or fiancee visa, which allows me to enter united states with a 3 months visa and ill have 3 months time to marry him and then 2 years to get my life started with him
we are going to go with the second option through US embassy in korea BUT what im afraid of is that they return us to USMC and make us apply through them, which will take forever
any ideas if they will or will not do that?

Should I Be Frightened?

In 2012 im joining the USMC and making it a career 20+ yrs. Im not afraid of war exept one thing. For some reason North Korea scares the **** out of me. Even if theres a war im still enlisting but why does North Korea scare me so much. Its more of like a spine shivering kinda thing.

The United States Deficit?

I just got back from talking to a representative on capitol hill, and him and I were talking about the US deficit (since he is a decision maker on this subject) There is much word of decreasing USAF troops and increasing USMC and Army troops along with increase in civilian contracting for Air Force jobs (because this is cheaper). I told him that decreasing air support would make our nation vulnerable under the circumstances that we were to be attacked by either two countries at the same time or North Korea (because they have the backing of China.) I told him, unfortunately, that the only way to fix the deficit is to bite the bullet and raise taxes. This will piss off the american people but this is a well needed move to keep the US defended in a time of crisis. What are your thoughts on this and what would you suggest if you were talking to him?
