How are they awarded? Is there a ceremony, or do you just find out which ones you are authorized to wear and buy them yourself?

If the Marine Corps operates anything like the Navy does, the process varies greatly depending on the significance of the medal or ribbon.
Some ribbons are awarded to anyone serving under certain conditions. Those are usually just purchased by the individuals entitled to wear them.
Significant medals and ribbons, such as a Bronze Star or the like, would typically be presented to the recipient at an awards ceremony.
unless you get like a purple heart or bronze star something of that high nature their will be a ceremony. now for unit ribbons their won’t be a ceremony they will tell you what your authorize to wear.
