I will be in the Marines as an officer in 4 yrs, and I just wanted to know if we will still be using the 5.56mm in infantry rifles and SAWs. I know that the round is very lethal above 2,700fps due to fragmentation, but doent transfer enough energy. I hear mixed things about finding new rounds but also hear about the IAR project for 5.56mm.
currently and probably for the next 5+ years the SAW, M16, M2, M21, M240, and the M40 will probably be the main weapons in the Marine Corps with the M4, M9, MP5, and M203 playing secondary roles
Early feedback from the Iraqi war was that the M16 (5.56 round) definitely was good enough to stop the enemy. However, feedback also indicated that more stopping power was needed over the 9mm pistol. People were wanting the .45 caliber brought back.
yes you will and i would worry about getting ready for OCS first ,and you will use cheapest rounds ,as an officer you most likely you wont ever have to fire a round against an enemy .
I don’t see our rifles changing in the next four years. There is nothing wrong with the ones we have now.
And the SAW is already on the way out.
