I’m considering joining the USMC but I have some questions:
1. How long is a tour of duty in Afghanistan or Iraq?
2. How many tours of duty is a marine required to fulfill in the above locations?
3. Does a Marine determine where he/she wants to serve?
4. If someone joins the Marines, is he/she required to serve for a minimum amount of years?
5. How does the USMC determine who will serve in either country or not?
I’d really prefer responses from those who served or are currently serving in the Marines.
Thanks.
lets see…
1. most tours are 7 months. they can get extended. u can go on a MEU (marine expeditionary unit) that will travel to different places in 7 months or go straight to eaither country.
2. depends on the unit your with and where they are in the deployment schedule.
3.not really… once u get out of school you can request to go to the earliest deploying unit.. other than that the marine corp tells u where ur gunna go
4. yes. the minimum is 4 or 5 yrs active(some data and aviation is a 5 yr enllistment because the school is a yr long) and 4 years reserve.
5. it depends on the number of troops needed in either country.
I will try to answer as best as I can but there is no easy answer.
1. The tour of duty usually lasts 7 months. USUALLY Sometimes it can be extended for a couple months.
2.It depends on your MOS and what unit you are with.
3. You get to fill out a dream sheet of where you want to be stationed. But ultimately they send you where they need you
4. You are required to serve a minimum of 4 years. Certain MOS’s may be 5 years.
5. It once again depends on your MOS and what unit you are stationed with. Some MOS’s will deploy more than others. Such as grunts.
I am a US Marine and proud to be ive been in for almost 2 years and i am actually deploying to Afghanistan Fri November 28th well youve got a good sense of direction the Marine Corps is proven to be the worlds most well trained fighting force since its birth in 1775.
1.usually 6-7months extension are usually optioal and MAY include bonuses.
2. As a Marine you arnt required to fulfill any tours anywhere but keep in mind we are at war and you are not always going to go to those places but the odds are pretty great as of now we are pulling out of Iraq so thats not to much of a consern for you but afghansitan is are main focus But with the traing we getr none of these places should be a consern
3 after completing you inital training you will go to you MOS school and from there when graduating from your school there will be a roster with places that need Marines of your MOS and according to how well you do in your class that will give you a better chance of pickin from that roster.
4.the minimum amount for active duty is 4 years
for reserve its a minimum of 6 years
5. As i said in #3 you MOS determines that the most as well as what unit you belong to.
I just hope you now by taking the call to become a US Marine you are prepaird to do whatever neccesary to fight for the freedom of not only the ppl in america but around the world if not im shure after training you will Semper Fidelis Lcpl Myles USMC
