Think global, act local.
Go to church groups, VFW posts, etc, and find someone from your town who’s serving. Local papers may have something about who’s just joined or just left on a tour of duty. Once you know who, find out where they live and whether it’s with a spouse, significant other, or parents and family.
Make up a hot dinner (casseroles are great) and go visit his or her spouse or family in town. Tell them you heard about their husband/wife/son/daughter/etc, and ask if there’s anything you can do to help: help around the house, babysitting, or even just be someone to talk to.
Ask if they mind if you send a care package, and if they don’t, what you should send. Whatever they say, add in a carton of Marlboros and some snickers bars, since even if they don’t smoke they can trade smokes for favors or other goods.
But there’s no need to get in some kind of nation-wide ‘adopt a soldier’ program; I can almost guarantee you that, of the people you know from high school, at least one is in Iraq right now, or has a close relative who is.
That’s how I met my husband actually. I went to anysoldier.com and saw that he needed stuff, and did this for 12 months and the rest is history. It’s alot of fun adopting them. They really enjoy it!

Thats not right. They are already getting paid! They dont need your support! They are getting paychecks for what they do! Why dont you help support kids with cancer and leukemia that are probably going to die before they get to drive a car and have no friends or kids that were born with hiv in thailand and africa. Why support grown men/women who are not even volunteers or anything. Majority of them are men. They can take care of themselves and majority are going to make it out alive and have veteran preference for all the good jobs. If you are going to apply your time or money towards a good cause, why not make it a good one!? My cousin is in the army. Hes a norteno. He told me he was just joining because he could shoot an assault rifle legally at people. Most soldiers are not like that, but you never know who you are “supporting” over there. An adult who knows how to use a gun who dies in a war is not as bad as some little kid dying at 12 years old who didnt sign up to be in the situation they are in. If you really want to help your country out and save lives (in the future during World War 3), stop shopping at Walmart and influence a freind to do the same. They are fighting that war for nothing because for every “terrorist” they get rid of over there, they come back over here and buy something made in China and that money helps fund the true enemies who sincerely want to do harm to your country and will soon have the allies, economy and motive to do that.
Adopt a child and let him grow up to be a soldier…
